What is The Joint Commission?

The Joint Commission (formerly known as JCAHO) is an independent, nonprofit organization that has set the standard for healthcare quality since 1951.[1] As the nation’s oldest and largest healthcare accrediting body, it evaluates over 24,000 healthcare organizations worldwide, including hospitals, behavioral health centers, and addiction treatment facilities.

Joint Commission accreditation is voluntary—facilities choose to undergo rigorous evaluation to prove their commitment to excellence. According to SAMHSA data, only about 23% of addiction treatment centers in the United States have earned Joint Commission accreditation.[3]

The Joint Commission Mission

“To continuously improve health care for the public by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.”[1]
